Lena Watkins Emergency Feeding Program
Named for community volunteer Lena Watkins, who helped establish the program many years ago, this program aims to meet the needs of hungry seniors.
Each month, with the help of volunteers the Food Bank provides supplemental bags of food to approximately 280 homebound seniors & disabled individuals. Many of our partner agencies operate their own variation of this much needed program within their own community. With about 35% of seniors reporting that they must choose between paying for food and paying for medicine, any help they receive is important. This program is designed to help fill gaps and offset some of the food costs for seniors.
Bags are packed weekly by volunteers and contain such items as canned fruits and vegetables, pasta and stews, and rice or beans. On the day of delivery, the volunteer collects additional items such as yogurt, milk, eggs, and bread from the Food Bank’s shelves and includes these healthy fresh items.
