Empty Bowl Luncheon

Empty Bowl Luncheons are held by Food Banks across the country.  Designed to raise awareness about the problem of hunger in our nation and as well as in our local communities, these luncheons typically offer a simple fare of soup and sandwiches and often feature the work of local artists who have donated works themed around the Empty Bowl Concept.

Join us for the 11th Annual Empty Bowl Luncheon

The 11th annual Empty Bowl Luncheon and Silent Auction will be held on Wednesday March 18, 2009 from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm at the Classic Center in downtown Athens. The event is held each year to raise awareness about the issue of hunger in our community. Central to the event is the idea of a simple lunch of soup and sandwich as well as the Empty Bowl. Attendees will choose from a chicken salad or pimento cheese sandwich and a potato or vegetable soup prepared by Center Stage Catering. All proceeds from the event go directly to providing food to members of our community who are in need of assistance.

Area artists and potters give some of their finest work to the silent auction each year. This year’s auction will feature twelve one-of-a-kind pottery pieces expressly hand-crafted for this event.

To kick-off this year's Empty Bowl Event, Good Dirt Studios & Gallery will host an Art Opening on Friday, Februay 13th, from 4-8 PM, to preview these original art pieces.  Attendees will be able to browse the artwork, visit with friends and talk with the artists who will be on hand to answer questions about their pieces.  The preview event is free of charge to the public and tickets to the Empty Bowl Luncheon will be available for puchase.

Area restaurants will feature these uniquely created bowls in their establishments from February 14th through March 17th to help promote the Empty Bowl Luncheon and create awareness of the local fight against hunger.  If you are unable to attend the Art Opening, please visit the following restaurants to view the pieces:
